Ganz was best-known as a stage actor for much of his career, as his unconventional looks made it hard to break into movies. Gradually his talent became known through a series of smaller roles, and by the late 1970s he secured lead roles in films by Rohmer and Wenders. He is very moving as the angel yearning to be human in the gorgeous Wings of Desire, and is effective playing a Frenchman in The Last Days Of Chez Nous. Yet it is for his recent role in the excellent Downfall that he will probably be best remembered, rendering Hitler a surprisingly moving, human character. < show less
