An Introduction A major stage actress, Dame Maggie Smith has nevertheless taken to film with gusto, and earned two Oscars and a plethora of nominations in the process. Her greatest performance is possibly as the alcoholic wife in Alan Bennett's series of monologues Talking Heads; it is a totally compelling tour-de-force. She is always compelling even in comparatively lighter films such as her sardonic spinster in Ladies In Lavender, and she stole the show with acerbic aplomb in Neil Simon's California Suite (for which she won an Oscar for playing an Oscar loser!)
