Think Western, think John Wayne. During a career, spanning nearly 50 years, Wayne would appear in 84 Westerns, 200 films in total, playing the lead in 142 of these. The 1935 John Ford film Stagecoach made Wayne famous and he would go on to develop his now legendary status under the direction of Ford and Hawks most notably. Yet more than an actor, Wayne is an American icon whose film roles stood for US individualism and the frontier spirit. His on screen persona would come to blur with his off screen image ensuring he would be become synonymous with American culture and values. His physical presence, distinctive mannerisms and rugged looks combined with the roles he would come to carefully select himself cemented his position as the All American Hero. < show less
