Buyer's Guide

An Introduction

With her unconventional looks, Davis had to rely on talent and charisma to break it in the movies; fortunately she had both in spades, and after her incendiary performance as the selfish, destructive waitress in Of Human Bondage, a star truly was born. Although often associated with playing bitchy roles, her greatest performances shaded in a vulnerability that left audiences rooting for her heroine, such as her ultimately robust socialite in Jezebel and, in one of the great American performances, as the fading Margo Channing in All About Eve.
