One of the most compelling actors of the big screen, Pacino's greatest roles came at the start of his career. He first gained attention for his riveting Michael Corleone in The Godfather, in which he holds attention despite the showier performances around him in the masterpiece. A string of brilliant characterisations followed, perhaps the best of which is his desperate, incendiary bank-robber in the atmospheric Dog Day Afternoon. Although many later performances gave way to grandstanding, his pitiable, ageing gangster in Donnie Brasco is a gripping masterclass in understated acting. < show less
