Book-ending her career (if you'll pardon the pun) with roles in Dicken's Great Expectations (she was Estella in David Lean's definitive 1946 version and Miss Haversham in a less-distinguished mini-series in 1989), Jean Simmons is one of those actresses whose career reads like a roll-call of classics, with performances in Black Narcissus, The Big Country, Elmer Gantry, Spartacus and Guys & Dolls, amongst a whole host of others.
Interestingly, although she largely retired from front of camera performances (her last movie was Shadows in the Sun in 2005), she could regularly be found providing voices in cutting edge animated movies like Howl's Moving Castle and Through the Moebius Strip. < show less
