Grant's early major films were knockabout comedies, playing both stuffy gentlemen (Bringing Up Baby) and wisecracking weasels (His Girl Friday) with hilarious panache. His much-imitated accent and devilish charm earned him wide-appeal, and were exploited to exciting effect in a number of Hitchcock thrillers, most notably as the semi-sadistic agent in Notorious, and as the bemused (but ever-cool) hero in his most popular hit, North By Northwest. There was always a hint of enigma about this great star; when told that "everybody would like to be Cary Grant", he quipped "so would I". < show less
