Often regarded as the greatest actor of his generation, and a champion of the method school of acting, De Niro's first great performance came as the psychotic hoodlum in Mean Streets, his first movie with Martin Scorsese. After winning an Oscar for his interpretation of the young don in Coppola's The Godfather Part II (a role spoken entirely in Italian), he continued to star in Scorsese films in one of the most fruitful collaborations in film history; he gives two of the greatest performances in American cinema as the redeemed loser in Taxi Driver, and as the grotesque boxer Jake La Motta in Raging Bull. < show less
