'Silent Drama' is, as it must be, a catch-all term for some of the most visually exciting, innovative films ever made. From the early films of such filmmakers as RW Paul and the films restored collected on the Retour de Flamme series, through to Dreyer's Michael and Murnau & Flaherty's Tabu, the filmmakers' approach was one in which, of necessity, image was privileged over words. This reached its apogee of universal film language with FW Murnau's Der Letzte Mann (aka The Last Laugh), which is a film told almost entirely without intertitles (there is one). < show less
