Ganz was best-known as a stage actor for much of his career, as his unconventional looks made it hard to break into movies. Gradually his talent became known through a series of smaller roles, and by the late 1970s he secured lead roles in films by Rohmer and Wenders. He is very moving as the angel yearning to be human in the gorgeous Wings of Desire, and is effective playing a Frenchman in The Last Days Of Chez Nous. Yet it is for his recent role in the excellent Downfall that he will probably be best remembered, rendering Hitler a surprisingly moving, human character.

Subsequent to being 'discovered' by Josef von Stermberg for the film, Blue Angel, a full decade into her career, Dietrich was shipped from German to Hollywood where she was initially marketed as Paramount Pictures' alternative to MGM's Swedish sensation Greta Garbo - Dietrich's success was largely of her own making, changing with the times (from showgirl in the 30s to war-time sweetheart in the 40s to stageshow performer between the 50s-70s. Unarguably one of the style icons of the 20th century (just ask Madonna), her performances stand the test of time and resolutely underline why she is remembered as fondly as she is.
