Ingmar Bergman bestrides Scandinavian cinema. Fellow Swede Victor Sjöström and Dane Carl Theodor Dreyer helped shape the techniques of silent cinema, but Bergman brought a new intellectual rigour and psychological depth to explorations of such key topics as love, faith and death. Eventually the likes of Finn Aki Kaurismäki and Swede Roy Andersson parodied his stoic style, while Dane Lars von Trier and his Dogme95 movement proved even more iconoclastic. Yet few film-makers have produced such consistently excellent work over so long a period. < show less
