Sight and Sound announce Top 10 Films of 2008!

Sight and Sound have revealed the Top 10 Films of 2008 based on a poll of 50 critics.

Sight and Sound asked 50 critics for their five personal cinematic highlights this year and from these the ten which appeared most frequently were crowned as their Top 10 Films of 2008. Steve McQueen's Hunger came out on top as the clear winner with Mike Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky, which divided audiences with its (overly?) optimistic outlook, making a surprise entry at number 8. Palm d'Or winner, The Class came in joint fifth place alongside Desplechin's black comedy A Christmas Tale, and the superb Daniel Day-Lewis ensured There Will Be Blood made it to second place.

1. Hunger (Steve McQueen, UK)
2. There Will Be Blood (Paul Thomas Anderson, USA)
3. WALL-E (Andrew Stanton, USA)
4. Gomorrah (Matteo Garrone, Italy)
5. A Christmas Tale (Arnaud Desplechin, France)
5. The Class (Laurent Cantet, France)
7. Of Time and the City (Terence Davies, UK)
8. Happy-Go-Lucky (Mike Leigh, UK)
9. The Headless Woman (Lucrecia Martel, Argentina/France/Italy/Spain)
9. Let the Right One In (Tomas Alfredson, Sweden)

You can read each of the critics' personal choices in full in the January edition of Sight and Sound which is available to buy now. The critics were also asked to give their favourite DVD releases of the year and the results can be viewed on the BFI website.
