Although the Expressionism of F.W. Murnau, Fritz Lang and G.W. Pabst had an incalculable influence on Hollywood, its legacy proved short-lived in Germany, as such psychological experimentation was discouraged under the Third Reich in favour of feel-good entertainment and the propaganda of Leni Riefenstahl.
