But the biggest impact was caused by the nouvelle vague, with young auteurs François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard and Louis Malle challenging the conventions of screen storytelling.
Fifty years on, few remain, however French Film retains elevated status in world cinema thanks to skilled directors such as Jacques Audiard and Claire Denis. < show less
