Huston's classic reworking of the Maxwell Anderson play about a gangster threatened with deportation who escapes with his henchmen to a hideout at a semi-derelict hotel on the island of Key West off Florida. A tense thriller given real distinction by the uniformly excellent cast and skilful direction which plays up the sense of suspenseful unease amidst the heat, and the threat of a hurricane, as the resolve of characters including Bogart's war veteran, Bacall as the girl who loves him and (memorably) Trevor as the boozy, disillusioned gangster's moll are tested to the limit whilst being held hostage by Edward G.'s gang.
