This sumptuous epic was the last film the great King Vidor directed – and it was also the last film for actor Tyrone Power, who died during filming to be replaced by Yul Bryner (Power is still visible in some long shots). The visual indulgence of the film is more than matched by the sultry Gina Lollobrigida, commanding the eye as much as the monumental sets. The DVD widescreen transfer is faultless. < less

A biblical epic which tells the story of King Solomon, the clash with his brother and the seductress the Queen Of Sheba who awaits the downfall of Israel. La Lollo pouts deliciously and her romance with Brynner (who replaced Tyrone Power after his untimely death midway through the production) creates one of the Bible's sultriest couples. Vidor piles on the visual splendour, revelling in the grandeur of the colourful, exotic costumery and armour, and making the most of the widescreen Super Technirama format in a series of spectacular crowd scenes.
