David Hemmings is the required international lead in Profondo Rosso (Deep Red), perhaps Argento's finest film. The plot surrounding Hemmings' concentrated efforts to reveal the identity of a maniacal pyscho killer is in itself formulaic, but the visceral battering Argento subjects us to is intense. The director here has found the top of his form: the dreamlike fluidity of the camerawork, the frenetic bursts of visual excitement and the incessant onslaught of Goblin's rock soundtrack will leave you reeling in a gobsmacked giallo stupor. Put it on loud.
