Review by Jamie Smith on 21st May 2002 Guiseppe Tomatore’s adorable classic conjures up nostalgic memories of both the magic of cinema in years gone by, and the magic of Sicily, seemingly untouched by the Second World War as it sweeps across Europe. Salvatore is a restless young boy who escapes from the humdrum of rural Italian life by visiting his friend, the gruff but amiable Alfredo who works the projecter at the local Cinema Paradiso. As film’s depictions of love and romance become more daring, the local priest begins censoring what the cinema shows. This is a beautiful film, at once hilarious and deeply moving.
