Review by anonymous on 8th June 2000 A controversial account of a group of US soldiers, trapped by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge, whose Captain is a psychopathic coward with a history of exposing his men to danger. This gripping and intense drama is one of Aldrich's finest films, centring on the fierce conflict between Palance's embittered, idealistic lieutenant and Albert as his cowardly superior.
Review by anonymous on 23rd April 2001 Winter, 1944…Somewhere in the Ardennes…Laid low by German Panzers on every side, an American unit struggles to survive. Inspired, determined, a lieutenant urges attack. Weak, afraid, his captain urges restraint. Expert writing, tough direction and tougher performances make for one of the best films about WWII ever.
