Preminger’s much-acclaimed epic about the birth of modern Israel has become a relatively rare item on TV – but all such showings are now redundant in light of this spectacularly impressive DVD transfer, in which all the widescreen splendour of Preminger’s vision is reproduced with crystal clarity. Of course, history has made Israel a highly contentious issue since the fim was made, but Preminger is dispassionate – and performances (Paul Newman, Eva Marie Saint) are exemplary. < less
