Review by jealous Canadian on 24th February 2003

This may be the finest battlefield dramatization ever filmed. From the desperate, day long drama at Hougoumont farmhouse, to the reckless charge of Marshall Neyes calvary against the British squares, to the final resolute advance of the Imperial Guards, this film has the stirring grandeur of the battlefield that would please any history fan boy. Devastating cannon barrages, steely nerves, and disdain for normal human impulses are the code of the day. There are also short, concise insights into the commanders, with great quotes from Wellington, Picton, and the grand Nappy himself. Its too bad that Ted Turner didnt study the value of dramatic understatement - doubled with battlefield focus - when he commissioned his civil war trilogy!

My only niggling complaint is that the Prussian advance is badly mis-represented, and more seriously, that I cant get the DVD in Canada.

Review by anon on 1st November 2001

I saw this film when it was first made and did not appreciate it.
I have seen it again recently and am amazed how I could have missed such an excellent film the first time round.
Brilliant acting by Christopher Plummer and Rod Steiger, the battle scenes were staggering and even if it was not historically accurate the story running between the two main characters kept me rapt.
