Cries And Whispers
Film Description A tense psychodrama, set in the 19th century and focussing on a group of women, one of whom is on the brink of death due to the pyschological torment, suffering and neglect of a marriage that is 'a tissue of lies'. Bergman avoids period 'prettiness'; instead colour is used expressively and symbolically to suggest the tormented characters' troubled states of mind. A stunning film, one of Bergman's most formally controlled and interesting works.
