Alexander Nevsky
Film Description Originally a stark warning to Hitler's Germany, this visually stunning account of the resistance to the 13th century Teutonic invasion remains among the most popular and entertaining Russian films. Enhanced by Tisse's camerawork, Cherkassov's heroic stature (as Nevsky), Prokofiev's stirring score, the Battle on the Ice's spacious grandeur and above all tremendous use of black and white, this is an immense work.

Review by anonymous on 1st April 2000 Prince Alexander Nevsky defeated the invading Teutoonic Nights in 1242. Eisenstein's first film for 10 years uses these events to stir Russian patriotism in the face of the German threat. With very little dialogue but a magnificent soundtrack from Prokofiev Eisenstein, as usual shows us how his theories of film translate into real motion pictures.
Review by Dave Butcher on 19th October 2001 It is hard to bring words to this film, for pure artistry of cammera angles one has to go a long way to find better. It is a must for every film buff and is hard to better even with modern technology. One of the most powerfull films in the cannon, it has to be seen to be believed. View more reviews by Dave Butcher
