The success of ‘Cats’ on video prompted this adaptation of Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s first musical effort. This proves to be a more successful translation because the narrative is more coherent, and the clever concept of telling the story as a school play means the pupils watching are an in-built audience, ready to clap and cheer each successive number. This immediately breathes more life into the proceedings. The cast demonstrate a nice line in self-depreciating humour and are not afraid to play it tongue-in-cheek. It is a visual treat with vibrant sets and costumes that add an almost cartoonist quality that makes it readily accessible.
