Film Description

Spielberg's sweeping war epic was adapted from J.G. Ballard's autobiographical story of a young boy separated from his parents when Shanghai was invaded in 1941. In one of his first film roles, Christian Bale plays the school boy who first learns some lessons in survival from the unscrupulous and savvy American Basie, and then some harsher lessons when they are thrown into a Japanese prison camp. The film features a strong supporting cast and an Oscar-nominated score by John Williams.
