Review by David Parkinson on 9th December 2002 Documentaries played a vital role in shaping British cinema’s realistic approach to drama. But our animation industry virtually vanished under the weight of American imports. This compilation relives its brief golden age, when artists of the calibre of Len Lye, Norman McLaren and Lotte Reiniger produced films that were not only visually inventive (particularly in the case of Lye’s A Colour Box and Trade Tattoo), but also utterly charming.
