A Glasgow of the long-term unemployed, the addicts and the dealers is depicted powerfully and convincingly (the film was shot in the area where people like this live). Paul Laverty makes sure that humour has its place in his screenplay and the romance between the two mature characters is a welcome element. Peter Mullan as Joe fully merits his Cannes best actor award. < less
