The story of Abe Sada is probably best known through Nagisa Oshima's "Empire of the Senses". This film, in its own way is even more remarkable and shocking. It is rare in the cinema to feel the intensity of erotic love. We are desensitised by the extremes of modern pornography. Yet this film captures every frisson that occurs between a man and a woman in a state of erotic intoxication. In this film, unlike Oshima's later film, we also get some sense of Sada's life. Why she came to be in the position she was in and what happened to her after the violent end to her love affair. Pagan Films have given us a rare opportunity to see Japanese films hitherto ignored in the West.
