Film Description

The Grand Jury prize-winner at Cannes, but it's in the pairing of emotional precision with stunning snowscapes that the film really hits home. Ian Holm's tightly coiled lawyer tries to bring order to a town mourning the deaths of its children in a school bus accident. Egoyan traces the chilly territory of family trauma with an expert hand.

Review by Peter Warring on 14th February 2000

A school bus goes through the ice. A towns children dies. A whole society is overshadowed by grief. One day, a lawyer specialised in legal processes arrives. Ian Holm plays the lawyer who while trying to understand the inhabitants, struggles with his own child's drugproblem. A masterpiece, superbly directed by Egoyan.
