Review by Wolfram Parge on 26th April 2002 Robert Duvall gives one of his most powerful performances in The Apostle, his great labour of love which he also wrote and directed. Set in the Louisiana bible-belt, Robert Duvall is Sonny, a gifted southern preacher shattered by divorce and expulsion from his church. When he commits a crime of passion, Sonny becomes a fugitive hiding out in the small town of Bay Boutte. In one of the most moving and heart-breaking scenes of the film he commits himself as an apostle of the Lord, bringing his own special brand of Christian worship to revive the local people. With strong performances from Farrah Fawcett and Billy Bob Thornton, The Apostle is a superb film of great human strength that forges a story of immense personal power. It is the story of a man seeking, and ultimately finding, redemption through his faith. View more reviews by Wolfram Parge
