Film Description

A visually stunning adaptation of Thackeray. Kubricks constant theme, of the coming apart of well laid plans, and the spiralling control of obsession, are well laid out, Production design, score, photography and costumes all won Oscars, and Kubrick, whose outsider status would always deny him that award, won Bafta for Best Director.

Review by Mary Corbluth on 1st September 2001

An artistic delight for the eye, wounderous use of natural light and superb acting. A magnificent film.

Review by Clinton Morgan on 15th April 2002

Barry Lyndon is an unusual costume drama. It is neither a bawdy Tom Jones type romp nor is it a staid and boring BBC Drama/Merchant Ivory piece. Rather, Stanley Kubrick has breathed life into the genre by daring to stick to William Thackery's original text and developing lenses to film in natural light. A wonderful narration by the much missed Michael Horden and some great performances. As Steven Spielberg once said "You cannot switch off a Stanley Kubrick film once you've start watching, it's impossible." Barry Lyndon is such a film. It also credits the viewer with a modicum of intelligence.
Not just a film which is beautifully photographed. Which it is, especially the candlelit scenes. Barry Lyndon is also an emotional film, but be prepared to cry floods of tears later on (I'll not spoil it for you though.) Who says Mr. Kubrick is a cold director?
