Film Description

AKA The Promoter. Arnold Bennett's novel is amusingly adapted by Eric Ambler, and tells of a provincial's rise and the resulting social fallout with rich observation and acuity. Guinness plays 'the cheekiest man in town', with a large bank account and an amiably affectionate personality, and who soon becomes the youngest-ever Mayor of his hometown. Has he met his match when it comes to women though? There are two in his life, the attractive and vivacious dancing teacher Ruth Earp (Glynis Johns), and quiet, placid Nellie Cotterill (Petula Clark). Which one will he choose?
