A strange, sad and hauntingly romantic film noir and one of Ray's greatest films. Bogart plays self-destructive scriptwriter Dixon Steele who becomes a murder suspect after the death of a young woman. But fascinated neighbour Laurel Gray (Grahame) provides a false alibi. As one of the most touching and adult relationships in cinema develops, the couple gradually feel the strain under police interrogation and Steele's bouts of uncontrolled rage. "Never were despair and solitude so romantically alluring" Time Out.

Review by Barry Forshaw on 20th January 2003

As part of a very welcome package of classic Bogart movies, this issue provides the DVD debut for one of director Nicholas Ray's most incisive and disturbing films. And what makes the film so powerful is the fashion in which Humphrey Bogart’s remarkable performance is perfectly judged (by both actor and director); Ray strip-mines the more dangerous elements of Bogart's screen persona: the incipient violence and sociopathy of so many Bogart roles is moved centre stage: particularly interesting in light pf the fact that Bogart's character is nominally on the right side of the law. Another considerable plus is the presence of Gloria Grahame; her memorable turn as the doomed gangster’s moll in Fritz Lang's The Big Heat is here counterpointed by her subtle portrayal of dismay as she observes Bogart's deterioration. The DVD transfer is impeccable: the film hasn't been seen in such a pristine form since its cinema release.

classic film noir by eddie davies

I'm putting together a wish list for my 60th birthday and one of the genres i've always been interested in is film noir. I watched most of these in my old flea pit cinema in south wales but i'm sure they'll stand up well to viewing in DVD format. Comments and of course any essential titles i should add to mo list welcomed.
