Evita
Film Description The most notable screen musical of the past decade. This daringly uses a continuously sung-through score to relate the tale of Eva Peron, an Argentinean peasant girl who manipulated her way to the position of First Lady. Dynamic direction by Alan Parker, a sensational lead performance by Madonna as Eva Peron, topped off by Lloyd Webber's pulsating score that verges on a near-operatic grandiosity.

Review by RT. on 28th September 2000 The most notable screen musical of the past decade. This daringly uses a continuously sung-through score to relate the tale of Eva Peron, an Argentinean peasant girl who manipulated her way to the position of First Lady. Director Alan Parker brings dynamic visual flair to the proceedings that often borders on the epic. In what is arguably her greatest screen role, Madonna burns with passion and empathy, and reveals a previously unprecedented vocal range. She is ably supported by Antonio Banderas who adds charisma and humour to the role of Che. The icing on the cake is Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Tim Rice’s score, which pulsates with Latin rhythms and a near operatic grandiosity. The highlight of which, must be, Madonna’s highly sensitive re-interpretation of Eva’s anthem, ‘Don’t Cry For Me Argentina.’ RT
