Review by Julian Upton on 14th September 2006
As the bounder hapless Ian Carmichael sets out to confound, Terry-Thomas scales previously unachieved heights of incorrigibility in this lively adaptation of Stephen Potter's popular 'one-upmanship' books. Similarly, the great Alastair Sim is at his most endearingly unctuous as the huckster head of the eponymous school, where Carmichael enrols to transform himself from inoffensive failure to cad supreme. By following a curriculum that includes 'woo-manship' and 'lifemanship', our hero is soon beating the scoundrels at their own game, and winning the affections of English Rose Janette Scott to boot. It’s a jolly reminder of the days when getting one over on even one's most despised rival was an insufferably polite business. School for Scoundrels chugs through its series of effervescent sketches with great amiability, and features cameos from a gallery of British comedy greats. It was the last film in the troubled career of Robert Hamer, a director responsible for some of the finest films of the 1940s.
