Film Description

A charming, gentle car rally comedy, Genevieve was a huge box office hit in its day and perfectly captured the polite English romanticism of the early 1950s. Underneath the naivety and quaint sexual bickering of the four leads lies a superbly hand-crafted film, beautifully portraying an England that has long since vanished.

Review by Matt on 20th September 2000

This delightful 1953 british comedy stars John Gregson and Dinah Sheridan as Alan and Wendy McKim. This comedy follows the Mckims in their vintage 1904 Daraqc on the annual London to Brighton vintage car rally. Kenneth Moore and Kay Kendall also star as Ambrose Claverhouse, driving his 1904 Spyker, and friend Rosalyn Peters. After accompyning long time friends the Mckims to Brighton Ambrose and Alan have a small falling out and decide to race back to london as a bet to who has the better car. An excellent light harted comedy about vintage cars, friendship, and many picturesque locations of London which are long since gone.

Thursday 4th December 2003

In 1933, Alexander Korda’s gleefully saucy, The Private Life of Henry VIII made a huge international impact. Starring the sublime Charles Laughton, and launching the career of Merle Oberon, it announced the arrival of a cinema uniquely different from European ...  View article in full

Great British Films by John Wilde

Just a selection of films which made a big impact on me. Saw most of them first on TV and believed they were all in black and white. Some funny, some melodramatic one or two quite scary.
