Film Description

The Coens' trademark deadpan wit and imaginative characterisation blend to inspired effect in this bizarre comedy/mystery in which LA slacker Jeffrey 'The Dude' Lebowski, is mistaken for Jeffrey Lebowski, LA millionaire, by two angry gangsters. The Dude becomes entangled in the plot when he goes to visit the real Lebowski in order to get some retribution. Featuring snappy dialogue, twists galore and an astonishing Busby Berkeley-inspired dance routine, this one of the Coens' best.

Review by Dan Macklin on 5th April 2004

The Big Lebowski sees the idiosyncratic Coens hit the mark once again. Jeff Bridges stars as 'The Dude', who, through a case of mistaken identity, becomes involved in a kidnap scandal, and has his beloved rug ruined in the process.

If you've not seen the film already, you really need know little more at this juncture. In fact, there's a distinct possibility that you'll know little more for sure come the end as, in typical Coen Brothers fashion, various sub-plots go shooting off in various different directions.

Suffice to say, Bridges is excellent and thoroughly convincing in the lead role, ably assisted in his detective work by best buds and bowling partners Walter (a spectacularly short-tempered John Goodman) and Donny (Steve Buscemi).

Confused? You will be.

Article - "The Coen Brothers: Intolerable Cruelty" by Dave Tallerman
Friday 2nd April 2004

It is tempting to claim that the Coen brothers have never made a bad film; but let’s not forget their early Sam Raimi collaboration Crimewave – undeniably entertaining, but basically a car-crash of a movie. So let us say instead that Joel Coen, nominally the ...  View article in full
