Film Description

A visually austere version of Orwell's story, lent something of a novelty value by being released in the year the novel purported to prophesy. Yet this is an effective and uncompromising adaptation, stirred by its excellent central performances. Bleak and remorseless, it effectively brings Orwell's dystopian vision to life.

Review by Graeme Hobbs on 6th September 2004

Set in the grimy world of Airstrip One and filmed in bleak blues and greys, this is an effective period presentation of the world of Orwell’s novel in which war is used as a way of keeping society intact. The omnipresent screens with their hectoring voice blathering about increased output and production targets, the Ingsoc banners and the Victory Gin, the thought-police and the Anti-Sex League create an atmosphere both insidiously threatening and pervasively shabby. A resigned fatalism hangs over the characters – no matter how long he holds out against Big Brother, Winston knows that he will end up in the stained, white-tiled rooms of the Ministry of Love. Hurt is characteristically excellent and Burton gives a very good (and almost unblinking) performance as inner party member O’ Brien in his last film role.
