Film Description
An excellent 'western' from Ray in which conventions are turned on their head, gender roles are reversed and the dialogue consists almost entirely of cliches. The lead performances are captivating too, with Crawford unblinking, Hayden laconic and McCambridge hitting cartoon levels of spitefulness as the intense rival.

Review by cj on 8th June 2000
Ray's first Western gave him the opportunity to work creatively in colour and a marvellously ripe Freudian drama was the result. Crawford and McCambridge are the two gun-toting matriarchs fighting over the men they love and the ownership of a gambling saloon. Weird, utterly involving and unique in the history of the cowboy movie.

Review by Graeme Hobbs on 1st March 2005
Stylised, theatrical, artificial, absurd, even laugh-out-loud funny, Johnny Guitar was destined to be misunderstood by those who take their westerns neat. If a Brecht-influenced theatrical troupe decided to make a ‘western’ with dialogue composed entirely of clichés and one-liners, extracting full symbolic use of the cheap colour process in which they were filming and taking a few swipes at the pernicious witch-hunting political climate of the time along the way, it might look something like this. It’s a patchwork film too, stitched together in a manner in which mood and symbolism take precedence over such niceties as consistency of daylight.
Surprisingly, even with all its levels of artificiality, the central characters of Vienna (Joan Crawford) and Johnny (Sterling Hayden) have a chemistry and sexual charge that adds another level of appeal to the film. They warily circle each other and their love; he, the laconic ex-lover and gun-for-hire, she the unblinking saloon-owner. Mercedes McCambridge is enjoyable too as Vienna’s rival, with her portrayal reaching almost cartoon levels of spitefulness. Thoroughly enjoyable.
