Review by RT on 9th October 2002

Frank Capra’s comedy classic still fizzles with entertainment. Claudette Colbert is the rebellious socialite out to escape her father’s controlling hand; Clark Gable is the street-smart reporter out for a good story – they prove a genuinely funny double-act. A classic example of opposites attract, and love surmounting all obstacles, this good-natured movie blends sophisticated humour with heartfelt romance to produce a timeless classic. One of only 3 films to win all 5 major Academy Awards – a product of a bygone age in Hollywood history, but whose artistry confirms its rank as equal to the best of contemporary cinema.

Thursday 8th May 2008

The Americans didn't invent the studio system, but they certainly made the most effective use of it. Primarily headed by ‘moguls’ of European descent, the Hollywood studios were divided into five ‘majors’, three ‘minors’ and the various independents and B-hives on Po...  View article in full
