Review by anonymous on 24th February 2000

With "Millers Crossing," the Coen brothers bring their own particular vision to the gangster movie. (And not only vision; their creative editing extends to the use of the soundtrack, as with the recurring motif of the creaking pines). All the trappings are here - limos with running-boards, machine guns, the moll, the hats...especially the hats. Above all, in the words of Johnny Caspar, its about "Friendship, character...ethics." Review by John Davies on 21st February 2000

Byrne is Finney's loyal right-hand man in an absorbing tale of Irish-American gangsters drawn into a war with a rival Italian gang in 1929. Laced with trademark quirkily brilliant dialogue, 'Miller's Crossing' is both the consistently inventive Coen brothers finest, and one of the decade's outstanding films: intelligent, entertaining and stylish, with an enjoyably twisting plot and superb characters.

Some of the great adrenalin rushes in the cinema have come from carnage caused by advanced technology and its effects on whole populations. This list though keeps it low tech and personal.
