This Oscar-nominated film concerns a famous retired Taipei chef who is losing his taste and his patience with his three ungrateful daughters. Wishing his offspring would leave home but too stubborn and repressed to communicate his feelings, he instead serves up sumptuous Sunday feasts as a kind of ritual family bonding exercise. While each of his daughters feels a sense of guilt over their own needs and wants to look after dad, he secretly carries on a respectable romance with predatory widow Mrs Chiang. Destined to become a 'foodie' classic, not least for the the dazzling opening montage sequence, brilliantly edited and shot, where a stunning array of mouth watering dishes are prepared at breakneck speed.
