Mirror
Film Description Seamlessly blending past and present, dreams and memory, art, levitation and a wider overview of 20th Century Russian history, Tarkovsky's enigmatic account of childhood (and simultaneous expression of faith) is one of cinema's unique personal statements. Underpinned by spellbinding, almost rapturous, visual imagery - elements take on miraculous properties - this is film as poetry.

Review by anonymous on 24th February 2000 For many his greatest film. A fascinating multi-layered combination of real-life family relationships, childhood memories and dreams, interspersed with newsreel footage appropriate to the period. His father celebrated poet Arseny Tarkovsky reads his own poems on the soundtrack and his mother also appears in this autobiographical film. Each shot has an extraordinary resonance which extends far beyond the personal nature of the subject. Mirror is a film quite unlike any other made before or since.
Review by John Davies on 21st February 2000 Effortlessly blending past and present dreams, subjective reminiscence and a wider overview of 20th Century Russian history, Tarkovsky's enigmatic, deeply complex account of childhood (and simultaneous expression of faith) is one of Cinema's unique personal statements. Underpinned by spellbinding, almost rapturous, visual imagery - elements take on miraculous properties - this is film as pure poetry. View more reviews by John Davies
