Starring two of France's most enduring stars, Loulou is a highly effective examination of a relationship between a bourgeois married woman, Nelly (Isabelle Huppert) and a loutish if kind-hearted slob, Loulou (Gerard Depardieu). She meets him in a club when dancing with her husband (Guy Marchand, excellent in what could have been a clichéd role). When she flirts with Loulou, her husband slaps her, provoking a passionate liaison with the other man. Their scenes together generate great chemistry (particularly when their fervent lovemaking results in a broken bed!)
The moments when Huppert suddenly switches from passivity to fierce passion crackle with intensity. Depardieu plays the slovenly title character very cannily and charismatically - Loulou often acts selfishly, yet the audience can instantly see why she is attracted to him. There is a great, if cruel moment when Nelly rides off with Loulou on his motorcycle, and her husband desperately cries "But you can't discuss books with him!".
