Film Description
From the shockingly violent opening to the celestially lyrical finale, Lynch's bizarrely entertaining road movie was a controversial but richly deserved winner at Cannes. Cage and Dern stir up enough heat to strip the paint from the walls, the soundtrack is excellent, and there are enough visually stunning set-pieces and memorably strange cameos to merit multiple viewings.

Review by Steve Turner on 21st October 2005
During the opening minutes of Wild at Heart, David Lynch's hand clasps a chloroform handkerchief firmly over your mouth and kidnaps you for a road trip like no other. The experience is like fading in and out of drug-induced nightmare. Lovers Sailor and Lula, played to effective extreme by Nicholas Cage and Laura Dern, try to escape their sordid pasts and criminal associates by taking to the highway, but to little avail. Omens, accidents and assassins consistently mar their route. Disaster, horror and tragedy fall head first into scenes of intense erotic passion leaving you little time to catch your breath. The pieces of the story gradually fit together like a dream upon waking, and the appearance of some devilish and divine cameos add to the delirious nature of the movie. Lynch's psycho-sexual fairy tale is a distinct homage to The Wizard of Oz, with Dianne Ladd, as Lula's envious and demented mother, embodying a terrifying Wicked Witch. Lula’s clicking ruby shoes in times of trouble build a deeply unnerving atmosphere. Wild at Heart is an unforgettable piece of pulp cinema and the mark of a weird and wonderful filmmaker.
