Banned by Stalin and somewhat overshadowed by the applause lavished on Part I, the exaggerated operatic style, combined with stupendous visual compositions, decor and lighting (not forgetting Prokofiev's score) works magnificently. While the overall effect has a rich, dark, cumulative menace and power, the celebrated colour sequence, intense and shimmering, is a fabulous fiery jewel.
