Film Description

"Hello, HAL do you read me, HAL?"
"Affirmative, Dave, I read you."

Not just a film, more an event and a piece of philosophy wrapped in some of the most astonishing imagery ever filmed, this is a much imitated, profoundly inspiring and quite possibly immortal film.

Review by JD on 7th September 1999

There's Hollywood and then there's Kubrick; there's adolescent-fodder sci-fi and then there's '2001'. A film which in ambition, scope, visual spectacle and overall achievement is genuinely awe-inspiring, its 'Beyond the Infinite' sequence propelling both viewer and cinema itself to a new dimension. A wondrous destiny should await us.

Article - "Andrei Tarkovsky - Dreams / Morality / Freedom" by John Davies
Monday 14th May 2007

Andrei Tarkovsky died in 1986 at the age of just 54. His seven feature films, commencing with Ivan's Childhood in 1962, form one of the greatest and most individual bodies of work in cinema. Whether nominally making films in the areas of war, medieval histor...  View article in full

Leslie Halliwell was one of the most authoritative of film critics and a new edition of the film bible lists the Top 1000 movies of all time. Here we list the Top 100, all of which are undoubted classics that stand up to repeated viewings and which are testament to the brilliance that cinema can achieve.

Mind Blowing Experiences by Dan Hunter

There's nothing like the feeling when a film knocks you about the head with an overwhelming experience, leaving you thinking 'crikey!' as the credits roll. Here's a few favourites of mine that provided a memorable ride.

Mostly violent by User Rob

Many of this list are about violence. Violence is natural and has its uses, but it is mostly stupid.

SF connoisseur by D Etter

The best of Stanley Kubrick by Deano

Only 13 feature films, but each one a classic. His unique style, and originality in his films, made him one of the most respected and controversial artists of the 20th century. He passed away in March 1999, but world can still see his masterpiece's, which will live until the end of cinema.
