Witchfinder General
Film Description Fascinating and largely unheralded outside the usual coterie of film critics, Reeves's stunning and disturbing picture deserves to be widely known. Price is frighteningly demonic as the WG, and the restrained and realistic portrayal of medieval torture and violence is still powerfully effective. Described as one of the only genuine 'English westerns'. The young director made only two other films before his tragic and untimely death.

Review by Wolfram Parge on 23rd October 2002 A classic horror picture and perhaps British cinema's most fearsome film. Screen icon Vincent Price is unforgettable as sadistic lawyer Matthew Hopkins, self-styled Witchfinder General of tudor England. Riding through the countryside with his right-hand assistant and partner in crime, Hopkins descends on local villages, exploiting superstition and the lawlessness of the Civil War in his quest for 'doing God's work'. Depicting true events exacerbated by religious fanaticism, Witchfinder General is saturated with unconscious violence and an eerie atmosphere which hangs over a beautiful English countryside. This is an incredible film, powerful, with a phenomenal performance by Vincent Price that lingers in the mind long after the final screams have finished.
