Review by RT on 5th October 2000 Its storyline may be wafer-thin, but when a film offers such a feast of colour and spectacle, one may be encouraged to forgive any narrative sins. ‘An American in Paris’ is awash with sumptuous visual imagery, most of which is reserved for the stunning seventeen-minute finale, almost a motion picture in itself. It may be superfluous from a narrative-point of view, but still it remains its most memorable asset. Much credit for the film’s success must be accorded its star and choreographer Gene Kelly, who used a then revolutionary screen technique of combining ballet, jazz and modern dance styles to create his marvellous and thrilling set-pieces. Add to this a collection of delightful Gershwin songs and an enchanting performance by Leslie Caron, and you have a magical film experience, if one slightly bereft of narrative ideas. RT.
