The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant
Film Description Fassbinder's dazzling appropriation of the studio melodrama (or 'woman's picture') into the New cinema of West Germany is really quite extraordinary. Adapted from his own stage production and shot in ten days this is a precise dissection of emotional wounds, supremely played out within the confines of its gaudy, theatrical interior by an all-female cast. Accomplished both visually and technically, the emotional register becomes especially poignant when Petra listens to the Walker Brothers' In My Room on her bedside record player.
